What is a Sew Unique Metre? (or a SUM as we like to call it)

Hello SUFans (see what I did there hehe)!

Have you seen the awesome SUMs on the website or in the Sew Unique Fabrics Facebook group but wondered what on earth they are? Don’t worry it is a common question we get asked! In this blog post we will discuss the different SUMs we currently offer and show you some awesome ways they have been used by us here in SUF HQ, by some of our fabulous strike team and by some of our customers!

So what is a SUM?

SUM stands for Sew Unique Metre! Basically it’s 1m of fabric that has one or more panels and coordinating fabric all on the one 1m piece – neat right?!
Fabric Bases
Currently our SUMs are only offered on Cotton Lycra, however we do have plans to introduce more bases in the future! Make sure you join our Facebook Group and subscribe to our newsletter to stay in the loop!

Undie SUMs

These are our most popular! We offer Adults, Boys and Girls.

• The Adult Undie SUMs are perfect for women’s underwear – you get 3 panels and coordinating fabric and they are suitable for sizes XXS-2XL. You will have enough fabric for the gusset, front and back piece but will need solid or glitter for the bands – lucky we have that covered too 😉 One of the most popular patterns to use is the SUAT Scrundlewear and we have tested these panels using this pattern. There are other patterns you can use, however you may not be able to make all sizes. Some examples are the SUAT Bunzies or Thondlewear, Thread Faction #202 or the Sew By Pattern Pieces Norma Jean Shorties.

• The Girls Undie SUMs come in 2 variations, 1-6 years and 7-12 years. The 1-6 years SUMs have 6 panels and coordinating fabric, while the 7-12 years SUMs have 4 panels and coordinating fabric – both SUMs are perfect for front and back, gussets and bands! We have tested these SUMs on a variety of patterns and depending on the size you’re making you can use most patterns on the market! The SUAT Kids Scrundlewear and Sew By Pattern Pieces Norma Jean Juniors are the most used patterns and the sizing has been tested and works well! Some of the other patterns you could use are Wicked Fabrics Whitney Knickers, A Sparkly Baby Lil Bug Undies or Made By Jacks Mum Speedy Pants Briefs!

• The Boys Undie SUMs are available in sizes 1-6 only and are for Briefs style not boxerwear. They have 6 panels and coordinating fabric perfect for front, back, fly and band pieces! We have tested these SUMs with the SUAT Kids Scrundlewear, however there are possibly other patterns that you can use that might work as well.

SUMs

We also sell a range of SUMs designed to be used for projects – again they are 1m of fabric but these contain one large panel and coordinating fabric. Some of the panels measure 50cm x 50cm and others are 50cm x 60cm! Depending on the SUM you may get one or more coordinating fabrics that perfectly match the panel! These are ideal for making dresses, hoodies, shirts, singlets, leggings and more! You know each time you will have a perfectly coordinated outfit/project!

Fun Tee Dress SUM

This SUM is new to Sew Unique Fabrics! It was designed specifically for the Sew By Pattern Pieces Fun Tee Dress Add-On pattern! You get a panel, coordinating fabric and a band at the base! The panel measures 75cm wide and then the coordinating fabric is also 75cm wide. The band at the bottom is perfect for neck or arm bands, or even flutters! You will love this SUM and pattern – they are a match made in heaven and a quick satisfying sew!
